Known as the Gateway to the Scottish Highlands, Inverness attracts travelers on their way to or from the mountains of Scotland, or visiting nearby Loch Ness, the battlefield at Culloden or the Caledonian Canal, but it has plenty to offer the visitor in its own right. The Inverness music scene is thriving, particularly for traditional Scottish music, and there are good shopping opportunities and plenty of restaurants both excellent and inexpensive.
Inverness also has a good choice of luxury accommodation. Three of its best luxury hotels are listed below, including ones that feature good gourmet restaurants, spa facilities, and opportunities for golf.
Kingsmills Hotel and Leisure Club
The 4-Star Kingsmills Hotel and Leisure Club is an old hotel with a brand new leisure club and spa, and ideal for the golfing enthusiast as it is right next door to the Inverness Golf Club. The new Kingsclub is in its own building, on the far side of the car park from the main hotel, and as well as its own restaurant and spa, the luxury guest rooms here also have easy access to the sauna, steam room, swimming pool and gyms. The main hotel building dates from 1786, and retains its wonderful historic atmosphere. It was the home of the Provost of Inverness, and in the reception area is a letter dated 1787 from Robbie Burns about his visit to the house. Glen Mhor Hotel
The Glen Mhor Hotel has the perfect setting, beneath Inverness Castle and overlooking the River Ness. Some of its guest bedrooms also look out onto the river. It's a few minutes walk to both Inverness train station and the bus station, and eight miles from Inverness Airport. Its bistro, Nico's Seafood and Grill House, is an acclaimed Inverness restaurant in its own right, and there's also a bar. The bedrooms all have wireless internet, flatscreen TVs and luxury toiletries, and there is a choice of rooms from Classic and Riverside through to Junior Suites.

Rocpool Reserve Hotel
The boutique Rocpool Reserve Hotel is one of the best hotels in Inverness, and was voted 'Most Excellent UK City Hotel' in one poll, and in 2009 was voted Best Small Luxury Hotel – no mean achievement. Not least of its attractions is the chance to dine at its acclaimed Albert Roux restaurant, Chez Roux, which serves Scottish produce cooked with a French twist to the recipes. The bar at the Rocpool is also one of the city's hottest cocktail bars. The rooms, needless to say, match the Rocpool's status as a 5-Star luxury hotel.
