Inverness, the gateway to the Scottish Highlands, has a new spa hotel, but it is one of the oldest hotels in the city. The 4-star luxury Kingmills hotel, five minutes from the city centre and next to the Inverness Golf Club, recently opened the Kingsmills Leisure Club in a modern new building across from the main historic old hotel.
History of New Inverness Spa Hotel
The main Kingsmills Hotel building was constructed in 1786 for a gentleman named William Inglis, who went on to become the Provost of Inverness. Some of that original building still remains, like the ceiling and cornice in the Adams Lounge, and the whole hotel is still steeped in Scottish history.
Robert Burns visited William Inglis in 1787, and a letter from Scotland's greatest poet thanking Inglis for his hospitality is on display in the Kingsmills reception. The very name of the hotel comes from way back, as a meal mill used to stand in the grounds and until 1575 its licence to operate could only be granted by the Crown, and therefore it was a King's Mill. Sadly the mill disappeared in the 1950s, after the place was first opened as a luxury Inverness hotel in 1947.
Modern Indulgence at this Spa Hotel
The Kingsmills doesn't just trade on its past, though, as in 2010 it opened a brand new building, the Kingsclub and Spa. Across the car park from the old hotel, this stylish modern development adds 4-star spa luxury for the guests without affecting the historic atmosphere. Guests checking in at the Kingsclub have all the spa facilities on their doorstep, and the building also has its own restaurant where breakfast and other meals are served. Spa guests are of course still welcome to dine at either the Inglis Restaurant or the more casual Conservatory Brasserie in the main hotel building, one minute's walk away. Here you can also relax in the Lounge and Bar, which claims to have one of the biggest and best selections of malt whiskies in Inverness.
Rooms at this Luxury Inverness Hotel
Rooms in the main hotel include Garden Rooms, which have more privacy and seclusion and overlook the Kingsmill's four acres of landscaped grounds. Here is also a range of Classic Rooms, Deluxe Rooms and Family Rooms. Over at the Kingsclub the rooms have a more contemporary classic style, with Super Kingsize beds and topper mattresses.
In short, the Kingsmills combines modern spa luxury with historic Scottish hospitality a few minutes from the centre of Inverness, that gateway to the Scottish Highlands.
