Movie location tours are increasingly popular, and the UK's P and P Tours has now added an Atonement movie location tour to its programme. The tour combines film locations from the Oscar-winning movie, which was partly filmed in Shropshire, with visits to the locations for the hit BBC TV series Victorian Farm, also filmed in the county.
Atonement: the Movie
Atonement was released in 2007 and was based on the novel by Ian McEwan. It starred Keira Knightley, James McAvoy, Vanessa Redgrave, Harriet Walter, Brenda Blethyn, and Anthony Minghella, amongst others. The film was nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, and won the Oscar for Best Original Score
Atonement Movie Locations
The film was shot in numerous locations including London, Sussex, Norfolk, and even Grimsby. A major location, however, was Stokesay Court in Shropshire, where all the interior and exterior scenes for the Tallis family home were filmed.
Victorian Farm TV Locations
Victorian Farm was a historical documentary series shown on BBC-2 in early 2009. It became a big hit, and was filmed on the Acton Scott Estate, featuring the Acton Scott Historic Working Farm at Acton Scott in Shropshire.
Victorian Farm and Atonement Movie Location Tour
From May to September 2010, P and P Tours runs a 2-day tour, A Shropshire Double Bill. This takes visitors behind the Shropshire scenes for both Atonement and Victorian Farm. It includes one night's accommodation in a luxury hotel, with breakfast, coach travel, afternoon tea, the services of two expert guides in mother-and-daughter team Helen Wilkinson and Maddy Hall, exclusive tours of the locations and, of course, plenty of backstage gossip about the productions.
In addition, from June 2010 onwards die-hard fans can add an extra day's tour of the Atonement London locations, run in conjunction with Britmovietours. Eiher day of the 2-day tour can also be taken on its own, for guests who may not want or may not need to pay for the overnight hotel accommodation.
Victorian Farm fans can see Glebe Farm and Henley Cottage, where the series was filmed, see the Victorian farming implements used, and get a historical background perspective from the expert guides. It also provides a rare chance to visit the key estate locations, not usually open to the public, in a private visit led by Rupert Acton, and to see the estate's other attractions which also featured in the show.
