A historic building in Central Glasgow is transformed into a stylish boutique hotel with dining in the hands of Michelin-starred chef Michael Caines.

Central Glasgow has no shortage of good hotels but new arrival ABode Glasgow is distinctly different. It combines boutique chic with a wonderful piece of city architecture, having been built in 1829 by Sir James Campbell. It was later the home of the British Prime Minster, Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman, who is the only person born and raised in Glasgow to go on to become Prime Minister.

After being a family home for almost a century, 129 Bath Street went on to become the impressive office of the Department of Education. The ABode hotel retains all the grand features of his impressive historic building, combines them with the latest in hi-tech luxury, and throws in one extra unique ingredient: a kitchen overseen by one of Britain's top chefs and winner of two Michelin stars, Michael Caines.

Michael Caines Restaurant in Glasgow

The Michael Caines Restaurant at ABode is both casual and surprisingly affordable. The lunch menu begins at £12.95 for two courses while even the 3-course dinner menu is, at the time of writing, only £18.95. For food of this quality you would normally pay that for one course.

Pairing Wine with Food

One great idea at ABode has been the chance to pair fine wine with food. For an extra £2 per course, diners can enjoy a different 75ml glass of wine for each dish on the menu. One recent dinner menu had some dishes that might provide a challenge to the average person, so it is fascinating to see how the sommelier chooses the right wine to compliment the dish. A starter of confit of rainbow trout with poached rhubarb and a light tomato and basil consommé, which was zinging with flavors, was matched with a beautifully buttery Australian Hellfire Bay Chardonnay. An equally flavoursome dessert of pineapple carpaccio with mango mousse and banana ice cream was paired with a Domaine Castera Moelleux Jurancon which had its own slightly sweet and fruity flavours to match.

Dining at the BarMC & Grill

On the lower level of ABode is a different kind of dining and drinking experience, but still with the quality touch of Michael Caines. The BarMC & Grill is both a late-night lounge bar and a day and night char-grill restaurant serving things like burgers, steaks and fresh grilled fish. Value for money is also on the menu here, in these recessionary times, with one recent promotion being 'Take Two', which offered two courses for two people and a bottle of wine for £25.

ABode Luxury Glasgow Hotel

The 4-star hotel is also very much about value and indulgence. On the value side there are rooms available for prices starting at £89, at the time of writing, which for the price of a room for two people in Central Glasgow is a real bargain. There are four types of room, ranging from the least expensive 'Comfortable' to the most expensive 'Fabulous'. The more expensive rooms naturally have more space and facilities, and the high ceilings of the original Victorian building have been retained, with pricier rooms having a few surprise treats for the guests.

Central Location for Luxury Hotel

The ABode Glasgow is on Bath Street, one block south of Sauchiehall Street and with a parking garage directly opposite, with a discount on parking fees for guests. The hotel is a 10-minute walk from Glasgow's Queen Street Station, and ten minutes from George Square.
